How do Storm Shadow missiles compare to other types of missiles in terms of effectiveness and range?
Storm Shadow missiles are highly effective, precision-guided weapons designed to penetrate and destroy hardened targets such as bunkers and ammunition stores. They have a range of about 250km (155 miles), making them suitable for strikes within Ukraine’s borders. However, they are not the longest-range missiles available; the American ATACMs, for example, have a greater range of 300km.
In terms of effectiveness, Storm Shadow missiles have been used with great success by Ukraine, particularly in striking well-protected targets in occupied territory. They are often launched in conjunction with drones to overwhelm enemy air defenses, a tactic also employed by Russia against Ukraine.
The missiles are expensive, costing nearly US$1 million each, which means they are typically used sparingly and as part of a strategic plan. While they are a valuable asset to Ukraine’s defense, their limited numbers and the precautions taken by Russia, such as moving assets further from Ukraine’s border, may limit their overall impact on the war.
