At its Ignite developer conference in Seattle, Microsoft introduced a new chip, called Maia, to speed up AI computing tasks

In a strategic move to address the escalating costs of delivering artificial intelligence services, Microsoft stole the spotlight at its Ignite developer conference in Seattle by introducing two custom-designed chips: Maia and Cobalt. These chips are poised to revolutionize AI computing tasks and pave the way for more cost-effective solutions in the realm of cloud services. According to Microsoft, the Azure AI Accelerators can deliver up to 100 times faster inference and 10 times faster training than conventional CPUs and GPUs. Inference is the process of applying a trained AI model to new data, while training is the process of creating and updating the model itself.

Maia: Powering Microsoft’s AI Ambitions

The Maia chip, unveiled at Ignite, is set to play a pivotal role in accelerating AI computing tasks. Designed specifically to run large language models, Maia forms the backbone of Microsoft’s $30-a-month “Copilot” service catering to business software users and developers seeking customizable AI services.

Optimizing AI Models: Microsoft executives expressed their commitment to driving down the high costs associated with AI services by channeling their efforts through a common set of foundational AI models, with Maia positioned as the optimal solution for this approach.

“Faster, Lower Cost, Higher Quality”: Scott Guthrie, the executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and AI group, emphasized how Maia enables Microsoft to provide faster, lower-cost, and higher-quality solutions to its customers, positioning the company at the forefront of innovation in the AI landscape.

Cobalt: A Dual-Purpose Marvel

The second chip in Microsoft’s groundbreaking announcement is Cobalt, a central processing unit (CPU) leveraging technology from Arm Holdings. Positioned as an internal cost-saving tool and a direct response to cloud rival Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cobalt is a strategic move by Microsoft to enhance its competitive edge.

Teams Powerhouse: Already tested to power Teams, Microsoft’s business messaging tool, Cobalt serves as an internal cost saver by optimizing the performance of key applications.

AWS Competition: Microsoft aims to step into the ring with AWS by offering direct access to Cobalt, challenging the “Graviton” series of in-house chips provided by Amazon Web Services. This bold move is designed to ensure competitiveness in terms of performance and price-to-performance.

“Very Competitive” Design: According to Scott Guthrie, Cobalt is designed to be “very competitive” in performance and price-to-performance compared to Amazon’s chips.

Technical Insights and Standardization

While Microsoft provided limited technical details, Rani Borkar, Corporate Vice President for Azure hardware systems and infrastructure, revealed that both Maia and Cobalt are manufactured using 5-nanometer technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The Maia chip, in a move towards standardization, will be connected using standard Ethernet network cabling, as opposed to pricier custom Nvidia networking technology.

The Future of AI at Microsoft

As Microsoft positions itself as a key player in the AI landscape, these custom-designed chips underscore the company’s commitment to innovation, cost efficiency, and providing cutting-edge solutions. The strategic introduction of Maia and Cobalt opens new avenues for enhanced AI capabilities within Microsoft’s subscription software offerings and Azure cloud computing service, ultimately reshaping the future of AI computing.

The Azure AI Accelerators are expected to be available in preview later this year, and generally available in 2024. Microsoft says that it will continue to invest in FPGAs as well as other emerging technologies, such as quantum computing and neuromorphic computing, to advance its vision of democratizing AI for everyone.
